Offer two options and hold them up so your child can see both. Pause, then respond warmly to whatever way they let you know — a look, a point, a sound or a word.
After you say something, count slowly to five in your head. That quiet space gives your child room to take their turn without feeling rushed.
Name each step out loud as it happens — “socks on”, “arm in”, “all done”. Repeating the same words daily helps familiar language stick.
Blow a few bubbles, then hold the wand still and wait. Bubbles create a natural reason for your child to ask for “more” again and again.
Follow your child’s lead instead of every word on the page. Talk about what they point at, and let them turn the pages at their own pace.
Describe what everyone is doing and tasting at the table. Add one or two words to whatever your child says to gently stretch their phrase.
Age ranges are general guidance only. Children develop at their own pace, so follow your child's lead and stop any activity that feels frustrating for either of you. If you have concerns about your child's communication, speak with a qualified professional.
